Children in Nepal are fighting for survival after the devastating flash flood

At around 9am on 26 August 2026, the Bhote Koshi River burst its banks and tore through Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Entire villages have been swept away. Bridges collapsed. Roads vanished. The BBC is reporting over 5,000 people missing. Families who had so little to lose lost everything.

You can help. We are working in the area, through local partners, distributing food, clean water, shelter and sanitation supplies to children and families who now have nothing. But we need your help to continue reaching those in greatest need. Your gift today will help children to survive in the coming days and weeks and begin to recover from the trauma of this disaster.

How your donation will help children affected by the flood

Your generosity today will bring children and families immediate relief and hope.

The flash flooding struck communities already facing significant challenges. In Nuwakot District, malnutrition rates in children under five years of age are above the national average. This disaster is expected to exacerbate existing vulnerabilities related to nutrition, protection, education and access to essential services.

Protecting children's well-being and helping families recover with dignity is at the heart of our response. Together, through local partners, we will provide emergency food assistance, shelter support, clean water and sanitation kits alongside vital child protection and psychosocial support.

We must act now to ensure children are safe, protected and able to recover alongside their families and communities.

Please give what you can today.

Nepal flash flood FAQs

  • The flash floods hit northern Nepal, primarily affecting the districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Some of the worst-affected areas include Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi, where homes, roads, bridges, markets and other vital infrastructure were destroyed or severely damaged.

  • The flash floods struck Nepal on 26 August 2026. At around 9:00am local time, floodwaters surged through the Bhote Koshi River, causing widespread destruction across affected communities in northern Nepal. Rescue, recovery and humanitarian response efforts began immediately and continue as families work to rebuild their lives.

  • According to initial assessments, a large section of glacier and rock broke away in the mountains, triggering an avalanche that blocked a river upstream. When the temporary blockage collapsed, it released a powerful surge of water downstream, causing devastating flash flooding. Experts and authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the disaster.

  • The flood has had a devastating impact on children and families. Many have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods, while schools, roads and essential infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed. Some communities remain difficult to access, limiting people's access to food, clean water and other basic necessities.

Children are especially vulnerable during emergencies. Many face disruption to their education, emotional distress, and increased risks linked to hunger, illness and protection concerns. Families who were already struggling before the floods now need urgent support to recover and rebuild.

  • Families affected by the flood urgently need essentials including safe shelter, food and clean water. Children may also need protection and support for their wellbeing as families recover from the disaster.
