India
India has the world’s 12th largest economy – and third largest in Asia – with an average growth rate of 8% over the past three years. The nation has seen remarkable successes in the 62 years since independence and has become a world player in the IT, telecommunications and pharmaceutical industries. But there is another side to the story. With more than one billion people, it is the second most populous country after China and over 500 million of its inhabitants struggle to survive on less than £1 a day. Differences of gender, class, caste, ethnic group and geography are all significant in determining the prospects of a child born in India today. World Vision continues to work with some of India’s poorest communities within our Area Development Programmes: Pathanamthitta, Malda, Nirman, North Tripura, Pune, Daringbadi, and more recently, Bhojpur, Patna and Vaishali.
