Zimbabwe & Zambia Child Sponsorship Updates 2011

Zimbabwe and Zambia

Zimbabwe

Situated in the southern part of Africa, Zimbabwe is a landlocked country that is currently wilting under a catastrophic and widespread humanitarian crisis. More than 1.3 million Zimbabweans live with HIV today, of which 133,000 are children, placing it in the top 10 worst affected nations in the world. World Vision has been working in Zimbabwe since 1973, when the country was known as Rhodesia, and now assists 75,000 children as part of 21 programmes. World Vision is also working with local communities to provide classrooms and other educational material for children as well as setting up Health clinics.

Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked country in sub- Saharan Africa, bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola and Namibia. Most people live in poverty – an estimated 64 per cent on less than $2 a day, according to the government’s own figures – and half of the population are unemployed. Most people rely on agriculture to make a living but there is only one harvest a year, meaning they must endure a lean season between September and February. This has led to high levels of malnutrition, particularly in under-fives. Around 25 per cent of the population benefits from World Vision’s work and its partnerships with local government and communities, nongovernmental organisations and churches.
