Why do we work on this?
World Vision advocates for better aid, in order to ensure that Official Development Assistance (ODA) is given and managed in such a way that it efficiently and effectively contributes to poverty reduction, whilst meeting the Millennium Development Goals.
We believe that aid must be used:
- Efficiently, so that the costs of delivery (transaction costs) are not high for the recipient country, and that as much of the aid reaches the poor as possible, rather than being used in servicing the aid system, through such instances as the creation of unnecessary parallel institutions.
- Effectively, so that aid shows real results in terms of outputs such as water, schools and the empowerment of the poor, especially children, women and the disabled.
- Specifically, on moving from aid dependency at both national and community levels, towards enabling people to build their own sustainable livelihoods, and engage with their governments to create and sustain the conditions for this to happen.
World Vision’s transformational development approach supports the view that aid is more than just resources; it is about relationships.
The way resources are ultimately allocated and delivered, in the context of both policy frameworks and programmes, is a product of the nature of relationships between and among those involved.
