On Sunday 18th May over 1,000 campaigners descended on Birmingham to mark the anniversary of the 1998 Jubilee campaign. Ten years have passed since 70,000 people surrounded the G8 summit in Birmingham and demanded that debt cancellation be pushed to the top of the G8 agenda.
Over the last ten years these tireless campaigners have scored a major victory as the issue of debt is now firmly on the agenda and already $88 billion worth of debt has been cancelled.
But much more needs to be done. On that Sunday in May, speakers from Jamacia, Zambia and South Africa told of how debt was re-accumulating in some countries and how $400 million of debt keeps some of the poorest countries in the world locked in perpetual poverty.
World Vision has been a strong supporter of the Jubilee Debt Campaign for many years and was present on the day to show support, Campaigns Officer Ben Grierson-Hill, said of the day “It was really encouraging to see the commitment of these campaigners, many have been fighting for years in support of this cause and have got some amazing results, and on things certain - with campaigners like this backing you up how can you fail!”
