Sudan Summary Overview

Sudan

Sudan, the largest country in Africa with an estimated population of 37 million, has been plagued by war for nearly 50 years. During this time there have been three main conflicts:

Darfur

United Nation reports indicate that the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur has led to approximately 200,000 people killed and over two million others fleeing their homes due to the fighting.

Southern Sudan

A brutal civil war between the north and south of Sudan which ran for 21 years only ending in 2005 with the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Despite this formal cessation of hostilities, sporadic fighting continues and a humanitarian crisis still exists as hundreds of thousands of people return home to areas devastated by war.

Eastern Sudan
