Sisters’ compassion lives on

Photograph of Mother and Childcare Block, Mehal Meda, Ethiopia. When children’s nurse Barbara Rattenbury died in 1996, her sister Joyce gave World Vision a share of the money she left her. It helped to fund a long-term health project in Ethiopia – a country Barbara had very strong links with during her life.

The money was used to construct a Mother and Childcare Centre at a rural hospital supported by World Vision. Training and new equipment mean that doctors can now deal with complicated births locally, saving women a 150km trip to the next-nearest hospital.

In 2003 Joyce passed away and left a generous share of her estate to World Vision. This gift has enabled a new outpatients department, administration block and medical store to be built at the hospital.

A safe school for Keung

Legacies Keung Image Thanks to funding we received from legacies, nine-year-old Keung and his friends can now learn in a brand-new classroom, equipped with new desks and chairs. It might sound like a small thing, but without a clean, safe building to attend school in these children from Cambodia could miss out on education altogether.

"My classroom is a new building supported by World Vision," says Keung. "I like my classroom now because it is clean and nice and makes me enjoy my study. Before, I didn’t want to go to school because the old building was unsafe and we were afraid the roof would fall in.

"I will study hard because in the future I want to be a policeman. I can earn money for my family just like my father."
