Micro Enterprise Development

The majority of the world’s population lives on less than US $2 per day. Despite this, more than 500 million of these people are economically active. They earn their livelihoods through being self employed or by working in small businesses of up to five people. These micro-entrepreneurs make a wide range of goods in small workshops and engage in small trading and retail activities.

Yet these poor households often fail to secure the capital they need and miss opportunities for growth because they do not have access to financial resources, loans or a safe place to hold savings.

Micro Enterprise Development involves the provision of small, low interest loans to people who do not have the necessary collateral to obtain credit from the formal banking sector. Without Micro Enterprise Development schemes, these people are often forced to borrow from money lenders who charge extremely high interest rates, making it impossible to pay back borrowed money without falling further into debt.
