South Sudan - Food for education feeds dreams for the future

Decades of intermittent war have forced 50,000 people from their homes. This, alongside sporadic floods that have ravished the land, has forced some groups of South Sudanese to go hungry and become undernourished. This has had a particularly negative effect on young children, for whom adequate nutrition is so vitally important.

Thankfully, due to our South Sudan Appeal this June that has so far raised £170,000, we have been able to extend our relief work in the affected areas, we have expanded ou Food Aid programme to provide children with meals and boost enrolment in schools in Warrap State, South Sudan. This, alongside work such as food rations to vulnerable families, supplementary feeding for malnourished children under five as well as pregnant and lactating mothers, has had encouraging effects on many communities.

James Manut is a 13-year-old pupil at Karic primary school, one of the schools where we are implementing the Food for Education programme, using food donated by UN World Food Programme.

“When I am educated, I will be able to support my parents, the way they supported me…I want to be a teacher so that I can teach other children, ” James said.

Prior to the introduction of Food for Education, children had trouble staying in class because they were hungry. “Our homes are very far from school,” said James. “Some children go home when they are hungry to search for food, but never return to school till the next day.”

The schools receive a monthly ration of lentils, vegetable cooking oils, Corn Soya blend and sorghum. The food is cooked for breakfast and lunch for the pupils while they are in school. We have also trained cooks and school food monitors on hygiene practices.

We are also building and rehabilitating schools and health clinics by engaging the heads of the families to work on school structures and health clinics. In return they receive food rations to feed their families.
