Willams lives in a town in Bolivia, about 3,500 metres above sea level. The high altitude and extreme weather conditions make it difficult for families to make a living off the land. The lack of variety in children’s diets has led to many being malnourished. Child Sponsorship is changing that. It has funded the construction of special greenhouses, which are being used by farmers to grow and protect crops. This has helped to improve children’s health in the area. Clare visited the child she sponsors in January 2012. "Seeing Shirati toddling over it was hard not to burst into tears, I didn’t expect it to affect me so much but she was so beautiful and happy to see us and, well… real. I couldn’t help but fall in love with her there and then.”

Shirati's short life has already been incredibly hard. Her mother died in childbirth, and her father has also passed away. She lives with her grandmother. “Shirati’s too young to understand everything but I can see how sponsorship is a big weight off her grandmother’s mind.

How does sponsorship help children?

Millions of children around the world need help to break the never-ending cycle of poverty. Hunger weakens them. Unsafe drinking water makes them sick. Missing out on an education keeps them from reaching their potential.

As a sponsor, you will help provide a child with sustainable access to appropriate life-changing basics like nutritious food, clean water, healthcare, education and help protect them from child labour, child abuse and early child marriage.

Child sponsorship also helps families and communities lift themselves out of poverty by providing job training, business coaching, small loans, along with training to help poverty-affected farmers learn new ways to irrigate and grow crops.

Will I get to know my sponsored child?

You'll be given the opportunity to personally connect with your sponsored child — building a relationship that could change both your lives.
